Fynbos Court

Fynbos Court is organized as a sequence of sheltered landscapes. Thick ochre walls extend into the slope, creating pockets of shade and protection from the prevailing wind. Rather than placing every room on the view, the house alternates between enclosed planted courts and carefully framed glimpses of the ocean.

The principal court is the social heart: a narrow water rill moves through indigenous planting, linking the kitchen terrace, living pavilion and guest wing. Bronze roof planes appear to hover above the earth walls, drawing air through the interior and casting deep, graphic shadows. Private rooms step down the site, each with its own garden and a different relationship to morning light.

The landscape is not ornamental. Restored fynbos, permeable paths and water-wise planting stabilize the slope and extend habitat close to the house. Inside, tawny stone, natural linen and dark timber maintain the warm register without becoming thematic. Fynbos Court is a generous residence with an unusually inward rhythm — made for conversation, retreat and a climate that rewards protection as much as exposure.
